I’ve visited Bath several times over the years, but one hotel stay in particular has stuck with me.

For my birthday, Jass told me to pack swimwear and a book, then drove me to Bath for two nights at The Gainsborough Bath Spa.

It was one of my favourite UK hotel stays and made me realise how much difference the right hotel can make when you’re celebrating something special.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Bath for a special occasion, I’d choose your hotel based on the kind of celebration you want, whether that’s a birthday, anniversary or romantic weekend. Some are perfect for spending hours in the spa, while others are all about the setting, food or being able to walk into the city.

I’ve personally stayed at The Gainsborough, so I can tell you exactly what I thought of it. The other hotels in this guide are places I’d consider booking for a future special occasion, based on their location and amenities.

My shortlist of luxury spa hotels in Bath

These are the hotels I’d shortlist for a birthday, anniversary or romantic weekend in Bath.

The Gainsborough Bath Spa – A luxury city centre hotel with access to Bath’s thermal waters
The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa – An iconic Georgian setting for a romantic celebration
The Bath Priory – A peaceful country house-style hotel with gardens
Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel – A traditional luxury hotel with spa facilities
No.15 by GuestHouse – A characterful boutique hotel with treatments for two rather than a traditional pool-based spa
Homewood Hotel & Spa – A countryside spa escape just outside Bath.

I wouldn’t choose between them purely on which has the fanciest-looking rooms.

Think about what you actually want from your trip.

Do you want to spend the weekend exploring Bath and return to a lovely hotel in the evening? Or would you rather book somewhere with a spa, have a long breakfast and spend most of the weekend relaxing?

That distinction is much more useful than simply searching for the most expensive hotel in Bath.

The Gainsborough Bath Spa: My pick for a birthday or luxury spa weekend

The Gainsborough Bath Spa is the hotel I’d recommend if you want your accommodation to be part of the special occasion.

I stayed here for two nights for my birthday and absolutely loved having access to the hotel’s Spa Village.

It’s in the centre of Bath, so you’re within walking distance of the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, Thermae Bath Spa and plenty of excellent restaurants.

But the location isn’t the main reason I’d book it.

It’s the spa.

Our room at The Gainsborough Bath Spa

We stayed in an Executive Queen Room and the first thing I noticed was how high the ceilings were.

The room felt incredibly grand.

In fact, the ceilings were so high that the bed looked almost comically small in comparison.

There was plenty of space, with a sofa, desk, television, coffee station, wardrobe and large bathroom. We also had robes and slippers for the spa, plus a complimentary drinks fridge.

The windows were so high that I couldn’t actually see out of them, even when standing on my tip-toes.

That made me laugh.

Despite being in the city centre, our room was surprisingly quiet overnight.

My only real criticism was the bed. The mattress and pillows were a little too soft for my liking.

It wasn’t enough to spoil our stay, but I always think it’s worth mentioning the little things rather than pretending every part of a luxury hotel is perfect.

The Spa Village is what makes it special

This was my favourite part of The Gainsborough.

The Spa Village has access to Bath’s natural thermal waters and includes a main thermal pool, two smaller Balneo pools, saunas, a steam room and an ice alcove.

It rained during our stay and floating in the warm water while listening to the rain hit the glass was ridiculously relaxing.

I could have stayed there for hours.

I also loved the hotter Balneo pool.

I was considerably less enthusiastic about rubbing crushed ice all over myself, but the chilled lavender-scented towels were much more my thing.

When we stayed, hotel guests had included spa access during designated morning and evening sessions. You could pay extra to visit outside those times.

I’d check the current arrangements before booking because spa access is a big part of the reason to stay here.

We didn’t book any treatments and I honestly didn’t feel like we were missing out.

Between the thermal pools, saunas and steam room, there was plenty to enjoy.

My tip: Pack your own flip flops for the spa. I was very glad I’d brought mine.

Breakfast at The Gainsborough

Breakfast was another highlight.

There was a continental buffet alongside an à la carte menu of cooked dishes.

As someone who will choose a continental breakfast almost every time, I was very happy. There were pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals and plenty of other options.

I did try the vegetarian breakfast for research purposes.

The sausage wasn’t my favourite, but the fried eggs were cooked perfectly. As a lifelong member of the anti-runny-yolk club, I appreciated that.

The oat milk cappuccinos were excellent too.

I had two each morning.

The only slightly frustrating part was trying to fit breakfast around our included morning spa session.

I’d recommend checking the timings when you arrive so you can make the most of both.

Is The Gainsborough worth booking for a special occasion?

For me, yes.

I wouldn’t necessarily book it for a sightseeing-heavy weekend when I knew I’d be out all day. I’d book a less grand hotel.

Here you’re paying for a hotel that you’ll actually want to spend time in.

But for a birthday, anniversary or romantic getaway where the plan is to slow down and enjoy a little luxury, it makes much more sense.

Our two-night stay was just perfect.

One night would have felt far too short.

I’d book The Gainsborough for: A birthday, anniversary or luxury spa weekend when you want to enjoy Bath without feeling like you need to be out sightseeing all day.

The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa: For an iconic Bath experience

If you’re planning a special occasion in Bath and want somewhere that feels unmistakably Bath, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is worth considering.

The hotel occupies part of the famous Royal Crescent, one of the city’s most recognisable Georgian landmarks. I’ve visited the Royal Crescent on several trips to Bath and it’s one of my favourite parts of the city. I particularly love it later in the day when the Bath stone catches the light.

Staying here would be a very different experience from simply walking past and taking a photo.

What makes it more than a hotel with a beautiful address is that it also has a spa set within its secluded gardens. The spa includes a 12-metre heated relaxation pool, a vitality pool with massage jets, a sauna and a steam room.

What makes the Royal Crescent setting special?

After staying at The Gainsborough, I know how much I enjoy a hotel where the spa is part of the occasion. But if I were booking another milestone birthday or anniversary in Bath, I’d also be tempted by somewhere that feels special because of its setting.

That’s what appeals to me about The Royal Crescent. The idea of staying in one of Bath’s most recognisable buildings would make the trip feel memorable in a completely different way.

I also like that you wouldn’t have to choose between sightseeing and a spa weekend. You could explore Bath, then return to the hotel for a swim or some time in the gardens.

The hotel offers spa experiences that combine treatments with dining, including afternoon tea or dinner options. If I were booking for an anniversary, I’d compare those packages with the standard room rates rather than automatically booking accommodation and treatments separately.

If the setting matters just as much as the spa, this is one I’d be particularly interested in.

Before booking, I’d check exactly which spa facilities are included with the room rate and whether access needs to be reserved.

Best suited to: A romantic anniversary or milestone birthday where you want an iconic Bath setting, a garden spa and the option of making dining part of the celebration.

The Bath Priory: For a peaceful spa weekend

The Bath Priory is another luxury hotel I’d consider for a special occasion, particularly if I wanted a quieter stay.

It’s on Weston Road, around a mile from Bath city centre, and has a country house feel with four acres of gardens. That makes it quite different from booking a hotel right beside the Roman Baths.

You’re still visiting Bath, but the hotel is more of a retreat.

Is The Bath Priory right for a quieter celebration?

I love exploring Bath, but I also know how busy the city can get, particularly around the Roman Baths, Abbey and main shopping streets.

For a special occasion, I can see the appeal of spending a few hours sightseeing before returning to somewhere quieter. That’s what draws me to The Bath Priory.

Its Garden Spa by L’Occitane has an indoor pool, heated outdoor pool, sauna and aroma steam room. There’s also a dual treatment suite overlooking the gardens, which I’d be interested in for a romantic weekend.

Dining is another reason I’d consider staying here. The Bath Priory has a three AA Rosette restaurant overlooking the gardens, as well as The Pantry for more relaxed dining.

If I were booking an anniversary where a special meal was just as important as spa time, I’d look closely at The Bath Priory’s dining options and any available dinner-inclusive packages.

The trade-off is location. It’s not as convenient for popping in and out of central Bath as The Gainsborough, so I wouldn’t choose it for a weekend where I planned to spend most of my time exploring on foot.

On the other hand, the hotel offers complimentary on-site parking, which could be useful if you’re driving to Bath.

For me, The Bath Priory’s appeal is the combination of gardens, spa facilities and a special dinner, rather than simply having somewhere luxurious to return to after sightseeing.

Best suited to: An anniversary or birthday where you want a peaceful country house atmosphere, indoor and outdoor spa facilities and a memorable meal.

Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel: For a traditional luxury hotel experience

Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel is the one I’d look at if I wanted plenty of spa facilities to enjoy between trips into Bath.

Set in landscaped grounds away from the busiest streets, it has the grand exterior I’d expect from a classic Bath hotel.

What to consider before booking Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel

For me, the appeal is being able to combine a Bath city break with time spent relaxing at the hotel.

You could spend the morning exploring the Roman Baths and Royal Crescent, then head back for an afternoon in the spa.

There’s more to the spa here than a treatment room and a small pool. Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel has a 15-metre indoor swimming pool, an outdoor hydrotherapy pool, a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and thermal suite. It also offers ELEMIS and ishga treatments.

That’s useful to know if you’re comparing it with The Bath Priory. Both offer a more peaceful setting than a hotel in the middle of Bath, but I’d look at Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel for a traditional hotel-and-spa break where I could move between the different leisure facilities.

I’d be drawn to The Bath Priory for its gardens and dining as much as its spa.

Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel also has the Vellore Restaurant and Colonnade Bar, so you could plan dinner and drinks at the hotel rather than heading back into Bath every evening.

Before booking, I’d check whether your chosen room rate includes breakfast, parking and spa access, and whether treatments need to be reserved separately.

If you like the idea of a grand, traditional hotel where you can alternate between sightseeing and spa time, it’s one I’d compare with the other options on this list.

Best suited to: A traditional luxury weekend where you want a choice of spa facilities while still making time to explore Bath.

CHECK MACDONALD BATH SPA HOTEL PRICES AND AVAILABILITY

No.15 by GuestHouse: For a boutique hotel with personality

No.15 by GuestHouse is one I’d consider if I wanted something a little different from a traditional luxury hotel.

It’s set on Great Pulteney Street, one of Bath’s most beautiful Georgian streets, and combines its historic setting with characterful interiors.

If you’re the sort of person who loves boutique hotels, quirky details and rooms that don’t feel like they could belong to any hotel chain, this is worth looking at.

Who would enjoy No.15 by GuestHouse?

For a big birthday or anniversary, I don’t think you necessarily need to book the grandest hotel in the city. Sometimes a smaller hotel with more personality is exactly what you want.

No.15 appeals to me for that reason. Its location is also useful if you want to explore Bath on foot, with Pulteney Bridge, the Holburne Museum and the main city centre attractions within reach.

The important thing to know is that its spa is quite different from The Gainsborough’s.

No.15 doesn’t have a swimming pool, sauna or steam room. Instead, its spa focuses on massages, facials and treatments for two, including an experience in its oversized copper bath.

Having spent so much time in The Gainsborough’s thermal pools, I know I’d want to understand that distinction before booking another hotel specifically for a spa weekend.

If I wanted to spend hours moving between pools and saunas, No.15 wouldn’t offer the same kind of experience. But if I were planning a romantic city break and wanted to book a couples’ treatment as part of the celebration, its Copper Room would be something I’d look into.

The hotel recommends booking treatments in advance, which I’d definitely do if the spa experience was an important part of a birthday or anniversary surprise.

Best suited to: A romantic boutique hotel break where you want to explore Bath on foot and book a treatment for two, rather than spend most of the weekend in a large spa.

CHECK NO.15 BY GUESTHOUSE PRICES AND AVAILABILITY

Homewood: For a countryside spa escape near Bath

If you don’t actually need to stay in Bath city centre, Homewood is another hotel I’d consider for a special occasion.

It’s in Freshford, outside Bath, and offers a different kind of weekend from the city centre hotels.

Rather than stepping outside and finding yourself surrounded by Georgian streets, you’re booking somewhere that feels more like an escape.

Is Homewood too far from Bath city centre?

That depends on the kind of trip you’re planning.

Homewood says it’s approximately 15 minutes from Bath by car, so it isn’t somewhere I’d choose if I wanted to walk between the hotel and the city’s attractions. I’d also allow extra time for traffic, particularly at busy times.

If you’re arriving by train and want to explore Bath on foot throughout the weekend, I’d choose a more central hotel.

But our birthday stay at The Gainsborough made me realise that I don’t always need a packed sightseeing itinerary to enjoy Bath. We loved having time to relax at the hotel rather than feeling we had to be out exploring all day.

That’s why Homewood appeals to me for a future special occasion. Having visited Bath several times, I’d be happy to stay in the countryside and make the hotel the focus of the weekend, with a trip into the city if we fancied it.

The spa facilities would be a big part of that decision.

Homewood has an indoor hydrotherapy pool, heated outdoor swimming pool, vitality pool, sauna and steam room. Its outdoor spa facilities are particularly appealing if you like the idea of relaxing in warm water with countryside views rather than spending the entire weekend indoors.

I’d also look at the room categories carefully if I were planning a milestone birthday. Homewood offers Spa Suites with private covered hot tubs, barrel saunas and plunge pools, which could make the accommodation itself part of the celebration.

The hotel says overnight stays include free on-site parking and spa access from check-in until check-out, although I’d still confirm the arrangements for the room and dates I wanted to book.

For me, Homewood makes more sense as a countryside spa break with the option of visiting Bath, rather than a Bath sightseeing weekend with a hotel on the outskirts.

Best suited to: A birthday, anniversary or romantic countryside escape where you want to spend plenty of time at the hotel and don’t mind driving or arranging transport into Bath.

CHECK HOMEWOOD PRICES AND AVAILABILITY

Which spa hotel in Bath would I choose for a special occasion?

Having stayed at The Gainsborough, I know that’s a hotel I’d happily return to for another birthday or romantic weekend.

The Spa Village was genuinely one of my favourite hotel experiences.

But if I were booking somewhere new, I’d make the decision based on what kind of celebration I wanted.

For an iconic Bath setting, I’d look at The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa.

For a quieter celebration with gardens and a special meal, I’d look at The Bath Priory. If I wanted a traditional luxury hotel with plenty of spa facilities, I’d consider Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel.

For a boutique hotel with personality, I’d consider No.15 by GuestHouse.

And if I wanted to escape the city altogether, I’d look at Homewood.

I wouldn’t book any of them without checking exactly what’s included in the room rate.

A hotel can look like a brilliant deal until you realise that breakfast, parking, spa access and treatments all cost extra.

For a special occasion, I’d rather know the full cost before arriving than spend the weekend worrying about every additional charge.

Is Bath worth visiting for a romantic weekend?

Absolutely.

I’ve returned to Bath several times and it never feels like I’ve run out of reasons to visit.

You can spend the morning exploring the Roman Baths, have a lovely lunch, wander around the Royal Crescent and finish the day with dinner or drinks. If you’re planning your first visit, I’ve shared all my favourite places and experiences in my guide to what to do in Bath.

It’s also one of those cities where you don’t need a packed itinerary.

Some of my favourite moments in Bath have been wandering around without a plan and finding somewhere I’d missed on a previous visit.

For a romantic weekend, I’d actually recommend leaving some free time.

You don’t need to spend your entire birthday or anniversary rushing between attractions.

Especially if you’ve booked a luxury hotel with a spa.

How many nights should you book for a special occasion in Bath?

Personally, I’d book two nights if you can.

Our birthday stay at The Gainsborough was two nights and it felt like the right amount of time.

We could enjoy the spa, explore Bath and have slow mornings without constantly watching the clock.

One night would have felt too short, particularly when spa access is limited to certain times or you’ve booked treatments.

If you’re paying for a luxury hotel, give yourself enough time to actually enjoy it.

I’d also check the hotel’s check-in and check-out times before booking.

Arriving early doesn’t always mean you’ll be able to access your room or spa straight away.

What should you check before booking a spa hotel in Bath?

Before booking a hotel for a special occasion, I’d check a few things that can make a real difference to the experience.

Spa access: Is it included in your room rate? Are there designated sessions? Do you need to reserve a time?

Treatments: Are they included in a package or charged separately? Do you need to book them in advance?

Breakfast: Is it included? If not, how much will it add to your stay?

Parking: Does the hotel offer parking and is there an additional charge?

Room category: Does the room you’re booking actually have the features shown in the photos?

Location: Can you walk into Bath or will you need a car or taxi?

I learned from our stay at The Gainsborough that even when a hotel is wonderful, it’s worth understanding how the spa and breakfast timings work together.

We made the most of our stay, but a little planning helped.

Choosing a hotel for a special occasion in Bath

If I were booking another special occasion in Bath tomorrow, The Gainsborough Bath Spa would be one of the first hotels I’d check.

Not because it’s the only luxury hotel worth considering, but because I’ve stayed there and know how much I enjoyed the experience.

Floating in the warm thermal water while the rain fell against the glass roof is still one of my favourite memories from that birthday weekend.

That said, Bath has plenty of other lovely hotels to consider.

I’d start by deciding whether you want a city break with a lovely hotel or a spa break with a little sightseeing. Then choose the hotel that fits the trip you actually want to have.

Because if you’re booking somewhere special, you should have enough time to enjoy it.
